The original celebration of Halloween is actually similar to Japanese Obon. 
Halloween (All Hallows' Eve) is the night before All Hallows’ Day, a festival to celebrate and honor the dead.
At night, sometimes evil spirits would return to earth and people would carve vegetables, such as turnips to scare them away. 
But these days, we carve pumpkins, which are bigger and allow us to create a variety of designs.

ハロウィンの本来のお祝いは、実は日本のお盆に似ています。
ハロウィンは、死者を祝い敬う祭り（万聖節）の前夜です。
夜になると、悪霊が地上に戻ってくることがあり、人々はカブなどの野菜を彫って悪霊を追い払います。
現在では、カブより大きいカボチャを彫って、さまざまなデザインを作って楽しむことができます。
